Arizona Diamondbacks … A Young and Exciting Team
In 1998, the Arizona Diamondbacks became the newest team in Major League Baseball. They were named in a contest held before the team was ever granted, with the person who picked the winning name receiving a pair of lifetime season tickets.
The Diamondback is a snake indigenous to the state, making it the perfect choice for a team name. Their colors were turquoise, copper, black, and purple until 2007 when they discontinued all but the black and instead adopted a new “Sedona” red in addition to the changing of their uniform design.
For an expansion team they did amazingly well. In only their second season, the team won 100 games, clinching the National League West. They went on to the National League Division Finals but unfortunately lost. The next year was not as successful but in 2001 the team set records when they became the youngest ever to win an MLB World Series. The Diamondbacks, also commonly known by their nicknames the Snakes and the D-backs, currently have four division titles, one national league pennant, and one World Series to their credit.
Home of the Arizona Diamondbacks is Chase Field, which was known as the Bank One Ballpark, or BOB, until 2005. The park has seats for 49,033 fans and cost 354 million dollars to build. Chase Field was the third in the country to have a retractable roof and the first with a retractable roof to have natural grass. The roof was a vital part of the stadium as summers in Arizona can be overwhelmingly hot, with average temperatures in the 90s.
There is a pool in one corner of the field that fans can rent for 6,500 dollars a game and in 2008 the park had a new high definition scoreboard installed, the second largest in the league. The park also has many other features for families with children including playgrounds specific to various age groups, batting cages, and Futures field where children can take wiffle ball batting practice with tips and help from D-Backs training coaches. There is also Baxter’s Den and the Peter Piper Playhouse inside for children of all ages, with batting cages, games, and practice pitching the ball.
In 2000, Baxter the Bobcat became one of the newest members of the Arizona Diamondbacks. He entertains fans in the stands with acrobatics, stunts, and crazy antics at every home game. Baxter has his own room in the stadium.
As part of their community efforts, the Arizona Diamondbacks have started the No Chew Crew. This club is targeted at the younger fans in the hopes of discouraging the use of spit tobaccos and encouraging education on these dangerous items. The Crew is a joint venture with the local St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are a product of many years and much effort. They have fans throughout the state. Games are exciting, kids are entertained, and their community efforts are making a real difference in the lives of Arizonans.
